I'm really sorry, but you've probably noted that I used ??rear?? (the
notes of interrogation are really there), because I really don't know how
are SB Live 5.1 cards physically connected. I own SB Live 1024 and 512.

Sure, it can be possible. As far as I know these steps should be done:

amixer set Center 100%
amixer set LFE 100%
amixer set Surround 100%
aplay -D center_lfe <filename.wav>

If it doesn't work, please, send me output from 'amixer scontrols'.

I could be wrong, but it appears that the Center/LFE jack is connected to
the surround DAC of the AC'97 codec (that's why the Surround control
belonging to the AC'97 codec should be modified).
