hi,

i'm not sure, but is sfxload an oss-based program? assuming it is, then you might
want to check the sound portion of your /etc/modules.conf file. i seem to recall
something about putting the proper aliases in that file for oss sequencer support
(and oss mixer, etc.). i'm not sure if this is required though, or just what i've
seen in several modules.conf files on alsa-user and alsa-devel. i don't use oss,
but maybe someone who does could clear this up.

for example, i found the following portion of a modules.conf on the web at
"ultios.com/linhelp/son.html". it's typical of many i've seen.

------------------------------
# Support d'Alsa
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-carte

#Compatibilité OSS/Free
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
-------------------------------

i'm running alsa 0.9.0beta8a with *no* asound.conf file and kernel 2.4.0, but the
system is alsa-only with a hammerfall card, so ............... hope this helps.

good luck,
patrick
