If "modprobe soundcore" works as root, you've already got it. Most
distributions work that way. If not, it's time to recompile a kernel,
usually.

like distribution are important when trying to help) when asking
further questions and people will try. There are also good docs
available at http://www.alsa-project.org/ and http://www.linuxdoc.org/
Some find http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ to be helpful, too, and your
local Linux User Group may be able to help you with general problems.
