That seems quite odd.  does fastmail have a message limit of some kind?
As an example there is a dreamhost control panel setting that allows you to set a number of messages level before certain actions are taken..or that used to be the case. Speaking personally, unless your inbox has a buffer limit, that is a small number for a reaction.
