It gets weirder:

I just received my mail to the list. It appeared in the INBOX as new. Without opening it, I did

and the message was selected.

It seems that your messages are selected if they are unseen. Try to see if flagging all messages "Not New" (; a a * ! N) and then doing the search produces the correct results.

No, this does not change anything.

Another suggestion. Try to see if searching headers produces the result. In this case try

; t h From <search pattern>

Again, same result.

I took another look at the Thunderbird search: In the search dialog
there is the option "Run search on server". Here, I get the same
result: Search for e.g. "From contains <pattern>" does not find the
messages when the search is run on the server, and finds messages when
the option is off. In other words: same or similar behavior as alpine.

From that I think it is very likely that the problem is at
Strato.

For the time being, I will use the setting with /loser. This seems to
work sufficiently fast, at least for an temporary solution

Eduardo, thanks very much for your patient support!

Cheers,
Olaf
