If you start alpine with "-d" you get a log file with more information. 
Close alpine when you have seen the problem and inspect the log file.
 
That might give you some clues.

$ alpine -h
(...)
 -d n           Debug - set debug level to 'n', or use the following:
 -d keywords... flush,timestamp,imap=0..4,tcp,http,numfiles=0..31,verbose=0..9
(...)
