In the time that drafting begun on Spaaace!, I was actually really excited for the game, but when it actually arrived, it was unfortunately just not as interesting a game as I was hoping. It was much more interesting to break than to play. I think a new Spaaace! draft needs to introduce more elements to keep it enjoyable as a game. The only thing to do in Spaaace! is get into space battles and the only thing to do in space battles is choose a number of Energy you want to expend. The entire game boils down to two stats, attack and defense, like a single interaction in a single turn of a single game of Pokémon or Magic. In the context of a complex TCG with tens of other cards interacting in roughly the same way, this is fine, but as a full game it's hard to call this anything but anaemic (not to say a TCG is the model that we should be following, it's just a good comparison). As I recall, when ATMunn was writing the initial draft of Spaaace!, e intended to add some more detailed resource management but scrapped it to focus on the space battle gameplay. I think this was to the detriment of the game. Some amount of resources to acquire and protect would give players reasons to engage (or to not engage) in space battles. To me, a Spaaace! that I would enjoy playing looks little like the Spaaace! of 2019. -- Trigon Popular Polygon and Treasuror Extraordinaire
