Economic rent from capture of positive network externalities is the fentanyl of civilization. In the current civilizational collapse, this expresses as the big network effect monopolies blindly pursuing ever larger language models as a way of imposing bias and toxicity in the guise of "fighting bias and toxicity". In the meantime, a half century old unbiased metric for model selection lies starving and begging for a little more support in the Hutter Prize.
Is this how the world ends? Not with a bang but with phony baloney "AGI" projects parading around as the defenders of morality while trampling underfoot humanity until the very foundation of civility is crushed? Well, in the absence of a shift of the tax base off of activity and onto liquid value of net assets -- so as to deprive these monstrosities of their sustenance -- it would appear so.
