There is a crucial difference between self-modifying and self-improving methods, each having strong and weak points: Self-modifying code reaches a decision point and makes an abrupt decision to change its own opetation, usually in a non-reversible way short of reaching an opposite decision point. These are susceptible to being disabled by inaccurate information, which excuses them from many/most real-world applications. Most chatbots are self-modifying, as the occurrence of certain words or phrases permanently alters their operation.
