While it has been somewhat entertaining to watch Immortal Discoveries
argue with himself, albeit somewhat incoherently, the bottom line
remains. We need artificial superintelligence. The definiition is this
is an artificial intelligence capable of all modes of human thought and
able to do it better as well as other capabilities not found in the
human baseline. A system that is confined to one modality of operation
fails to be even generally intelligent no matter how well it implements
that modality. If the human mind does really well with physics, then,
therefore, we should be able to make a lot of progress by making a
system that does really well with physics. So, knowing that, we find
that there are many "easy" sub-problems that can be productively worked
on without any breakthrough developments. Indeed, achieveing
breakthrough developments can be greatly accelerated by having as much
of the "grunt work" done as possible.

Once again, we need a development platform conisting of either a robotic
platform or a rich VR simulation, on the scale and scope of a state of
the art video game. The sense I get from projects like Deep Mind is that
they seem to feel that they can short-circuit the development process of
these things by bootstrapping off of a much simpler system such as
Starcraft or the Atari catalog.

My counter argument to that position is that while the idea of
bootstrapping off of a simpler system is appealing, it is much less
intuitive and may conceal important development issues. The most
critical of which is whether the simplified environment presents an
"AGI-complete" problem to the proposed AGI. I tihnk Minecraft is
probably a lower-bound on AGI complete problems.

The more the AGI's enviornment resembles the baseline human
envioronment, the easier it will be for us to apply our innate
understanding of human psychology to debug the AGI and hence the
development should go faster even if it is, on first approximation, much
more complex.
