SOM could work, definitely id suggest unsupervised learning for its recognition, but the actual formulas and protocols is fully supervised. 50 states may accomplish quite a bit, but im only guessing yet, coding the modules is like high-level english symbolic commandments crossed with the perdanticness of lowlevel specificity.
