Each critical layer (not all layers are equal) would be equipped with a virus-like ability to mutate to the extent of being able to seamlessly integrate with any adjacent layer, even to logically diffuse the boundary constraint completely. Such a feature would afford the onion a degree of morphing capability in order to adapt. The meta-architecture (in the sense of cellular design) for the onion would contain the algorithms for regulating the overall systemic integrity and robustness during instances of mutation, adaptation, and states of temporary transmutation (layer-2-layer integration). Thus, the onion should remain effective as a stable system.

This is what creates and maintains the onion architecture. Some future AGI would have no access to the outer layers, so its powers would be VERY limited ... unless someone in an outer layer were to grant it access, as in the Colossus trilogy where they were put in control of the World's nuclear arsonal.
