Dear African Wikimedians

Wikimedia User Group Nigeria (Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation) has partnered
with the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), a
UNESCO Category 2 Institute established by the Federal Government of
Nigeria under UNESCO's auspices through the Federal Ministry of Information
and National Orientation.

The partnership was formalised through a **Memorandum of Understanding**
signed on 2 October 2026. Under the agreement, Wikimedia Nigeria will serve
as a Knowledge and Programme Partner to the Institute for an initial
two-year period, renewable for subsequent two-year terms by mutual written
agreement.

IMILI is an international, regional and national centre for research,
policy development, capacity building and cooperation in Media and
Information Literacy. Its work focuses on strengthening information
integrity, addressing misinformation and disinformation, improving digital
competencies and promoting responsible access to and use of information.

The partnership will focus on six areas of cooperation: research and
knowledge sharing, capacity building, advocacy and public engagement,
resource mobilisation, gender equality and inclusion, and regional and
international cooperation.

As a Knowledge and Programme Partner, Wikimedia Nigeria will contribute its
experience in open knowledge, digital literacy, community engagement and
Wikimedia projects to support the Institute's programmes in Nigeria and
across Africa. IMILI will provide technical and academic support, access to
relevant research resources, and opportunities to engage with Media and
Information Literacy networks, including relevant UNESCO networks where
appropriate.

The collaboration will also provide opportunities to involve Wikimedia
communities, educators, researchers, journalists and other stakeholders in
training, research, advocacy and knowledge-sharing activities.

Both organisations will work to develop a joint implementation plan,
identify priority programmes, and mobilise resources for agreed activities.

The partnership provides an opportunity to bring Wikimedia's open knowledge
work into closer collaboration with institutions working on Media and
Information Literacy, while expanding opportunities for Wikimedia
communities to contribute to education, research, and digital literacy
programmes in Nigeria and across Africa.
