Interesting, I didn’t expect that to work except at the sites that briefly
flash the page and then hide it. But I tried it at wired.com, theverge.com,
and theatlantic.com, and it seemed to work on all of them. Didn’t try Substack
yet.

I had to realize that URL means the whole thing including https://

Use 12ft.io/URL <http://12ft.io/URL>

I know that Google has started paying to re-publish from some publishers.

Much of what I want to read now requires a subscription, and I have given up
and subscribed to a few paywalled sites and some Substacks. Typically these
let you read everything on their website and also receive email newsletters.

What is the etiquette around sharing such content? Some let you send someone a
free one month subscription, but that seems like selling subscriptions to your
friends. If I just send a link to an article, I assume they will hit the
paywall. In some cases you can cut and paste from the HTML or PDF but that’s a
bit tedious and probably frowned upon.

Should I just assume if other people want to see the content they will have
their own subscriptions? Google News isn’t shy about linking to paywalled
articles, that happens to me about half the time I click on a link, and I’m
sorry, I’m not going to subscribe to Fortune or Barrons or WSJ or Rolling Stone
or Mother Jones just to read the occasional article that appears in a news feed.
