I don't have an answer to your question, but if you're not burying it, why
couldn't you just use the butt splices they sell at home stores that include
heatshrink?  Like this:

I think I've seen some that also have low melting point solder that can be
activated by a heat gun.

At least once I've actually put cable glands on the ends of a Type C conduit
body (like an LB but straight), then taped it for good measure, and buried
it.  This would be more for jacketed cable rather than several individual 16
AWG wires.

Occasionally I need to splice low voltage wiring in very damp environments.
Like a few 16 gauge wires for a sensor. I remember seeing a plastic tray
type thing that after joining the wires with whatever means you placed it in
the tray, filled the tray with silicone RTV then snapped it shut.

It looked something like an outdoor outlet cover like this but obviously
much smaller.
