The problem is the vernacular language becomes so ingrained that you can’t be
understood if you don’t use it.

1000 Mbps is neither a “bandwidth” or a “speed”, but using the technically
accurate terminology won’t be understood by 90% of people. It’s so pervasive
that even in informal discussions with other IT and communications people we
use the wrong words more often than the right ones.

It also leads to ambiguity. For example there are “Ethernet splitters” which
just use the spare pairs to deliver two connections down one cable. Obviously
limited to 100BaseT

Example:
https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Splitter-Adapter-Network-Internet/dp/B092DDYPYD/ref=asc_df_B092DDYPYD/?tag=hyprod-20

<https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Splitter-Adapter-Network-Internet/dp/B092DDYPYD/ref=asc_df_B092DDYPYD/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2109960817197677621&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005431&hvtargid=pla-2281435180458&mcid=fbbcfd9b12c83a07b478d3b2007451e3&hvocijid=2109960817197677621-B092DDYPYD-&hvexpln=73&th=1>

&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2109960817197677621&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005431&hvtargid=pla-2281435180458&mcid=fbbcfd9b12c83a07b478d3b2007451e3&hvocijid=2109960817197677621-B092DDYPYD-&hvexpln=73&th=1

So when someone says splitter now you have to questions to disambiguate because
apparently it now also means a switch. Then they think you’re the dumb one
because you had to ask questions. “Duh it’s a splitter, it splits the Internet
signal from one IN to two OUTs. What are you stupid?”

The most annoying to me is “extender”, “repeater”, “router”, “modem”, “hub”,
etc. Apparently we can now add “splitter” to that list. Any of those words
just means “box with blinky lights”, and you can’t tell what they’re talking
about unless they can give you a model number.

I chalk it all up to laziness on the part of the vendor, non-technical
technical writers, and just cheap stuff pretending to be something it isn't.

If you want and need a switch, get a damn switch. If they intersperse other
terms like splitter or hub, stay away.

I've been seeing Amazon recommend me 'Ethernet Splitters' They appear
to just be a switch, but I'm guessing that 'Ethernet Splitter' Makes
more sense to the commoners. I guess that makes sense from a marketing
perspective. I've probably used the term splitter when describing a
switch to a customer. I usually see 1-2 or 1-4 splitters. "1KMbps
splitter" that just sounds impressive.
