As far as Vivant goes, some local ISP that colo’s in our dc said they went poof quickly when the board saw big money in a quick sale of the spectrum they had.

Sound familiar? One of the few cases where a RUS loan went very bad. USDA and Chase private equity left holding the bag. Google search comes up with Denver Post articles, one quoting a vendor surprised at how nicely appointed the HQ was for a startup. Announced a stalking horse bidder but no real bidder came forward. Private equity investment was a condition for getting the RUS money, you’d think they would take the hit and the govt loan would be paid back but apparently they both got snookered. Openrange is the name I was trying to remember. Any idea what happened with them? I seem to remember they shut down suddenly and left customers without service. I don’t remember them getting bought out. I think at least one of them used WiMAX equipment that was somewhat popular with apartment dwellers because they had indoor modems. I also seem to remember equipment vendors left holding the bag, and surplus equipment showing up on eBay. I think one of them approached us about M&A but they were offering stock claiming that was better than cash because it would go up in value (yeah, right). Anyone remember the names of these companies, I’m drawing a blank. Also any recollection of what went wrong and lessons learned that might apply to the current rush to deploy broadand. -- AF mailing list AF@af.afmug.com<mailto:AF@af.afmug.com> http://af.afmug.com/mailman/listinfo/af_af.afmug.com -- AF mailing list AF@af.afmug.com<mailto:AF@af.afmug.com> http://af.afmug.com/mailman/listinfo/af_af.afmug.com
