Putin seems to believe the Cold War was the best of times.
I wonder if a version of the War Games plot could play out in Russia, with Putin ordering a nuclear strike and the generals refusing to push the button. Hard to tell, especially with all the misinformation flying around. We like to think of Kim Jong Un as a loon, but he actually seems somewhat rational (evil but rational), while Putin seems to be living in a fantasy world. I wonder if he has a “Make Russia Great Again” hat. It would have to be one of those traditional Russian fur hats. He probably harbors grudges all the way back to the breakup of the Soviet Union, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Apollo astronauts walking on the moon, the Cuban missile crisis, and the Khrushchev/Nixon “kitchen debate. Or maybe all the way back to the fall of the Czars. I also wonder if Edward Snowden is happy in Russia. Is Steven Seagal there? Did we manage to send Dennis Rodman to N. Korea? And I see Kim Dotcom is in the news, there’s a blast from the past. The problem of course is you can’t get the genie back in the bottle. What do you do once people possess the ability to destroy civilization? Some people advocate unilateral disarmament, but that seems naïve. Maybe like the Terminator movies you have to go back in time and try to change history. Some argue that nuclear weapons weren’t really necessary to end WWII. Others argue that if the Manhattan Project had been stopped, Germany and Russia and other nations would have invented nuclear weapons anyway, and in fact were on track to do so.
