Gmail? I think it's understood that gmail is crawling your email for targeted ad purposes. Why else would it be free?
I read recently that one of the data points leading to the spooky seeming ads is the proximity to other people's phones. You're talking about <topic> with someone and an hour later see an ad for <topic>. Spooky. Except it's because the person you were near has been googling for <topic> and they know you were near him. I'd been getting ads for holsters and body armor; which I thought was super weird. Then I read that little factoid about proximity to other people's phones and remembered that one of my co-workers is in a militia.
