Personally I like the approach the Germans do at at least some of their
rest areas.
All individual doors.
Most are labeled "toilet" but at least one is labeled pissoir.
You select your room based on whether you need to be seated or standing.
Each room has a selection of sinks as well. The toilet rooms are single
"receptacle" the pissoir room isn't.
In some spots, the toilet isn't free. I'd love to see that in some areas
in the US (like public transit restrooms), as they use those funds to hire
a full time restroom cleaner. You could (almost) eat off of the floor it
stays so clean. I have absolutely no problem paying for this service.
