Many first responders, fire and ems, do wear armor now, particularly in urban areas where potshots at fire trucks is becoming a fad.
The issue is arming them and giving them permission to kill. After the mid term is over, the media frenzy of "kill ther perp" will go back to defund. We do not want a defund the fire services movement. I like the merging fire and police idea. Cops are more agile in their vehicles. But then, it's a cop, and everyone is hating them. One thing to note is fire fighting has changed, its fire science now. I've literally watched buildings going to fully engulfed while the fire dept was creating their suppression plan. It's not like when my dad was a fireman and it was balls out, make hot cold, stop orange, make black, wet wet wet.
