That is one of two P-51's he owns. He used to fly the two seater with a
instructor all the time to satisfy insurance ( movie, not aviation )
requirements, but finally got good/comfortable enough to satisfy the
movie insurance companies and have enough "pull" to negotiate through it
and ( this is second hand ) bought the single seater. The two seater
is still his favorite from what I was also told, as he loves to take his
close friends flying. That a/c has shown up at Reno at least once, but
Cruise has not. There is a good interview with his co star about going
flying with him and his mastery comforting her fears.
Apparently his bit of sailing in this film may have given him just
enough taste to hook him on that according to some of the crew that was
below decks during the sailing scenes, as he asked about doing some more
up on SF bay, where he moved from SD after the sailing scenes there were
too boring.. A few of the crew are FB friends and were chatting about
it when asked. He is amazing about making _all_ the people involved
feel important according the the crew as long as you are being
completely professional.

I met the actual F14 pilot who was the consultant for the film and
flew with Tom Cruise. We had a LAN Party with a bunch of pilots
playing Falcon 4.0 after it was released. Forget his name but I have
pics at home to back it up lol. We watched Top Gun and he described
every scene what they had to do, and how much of it was fake. He did
mention the actors were barfing and couldn't handle it.
We had a lot of good laughs like one scene Cruise is on the motorcycle
the guy says "he's actually being towed there" and if you look you'll
notice yeah you can't see the wheels its just a close shot.
Now Tom flies on his own!

actually is his P51.

No model a/c ... No continuity errors from wings swept to unswept
frame to frame. Cruise insisted on all the right stuff so there
would
never be another movie to compare. It was great watching the
interview
on youtube about the bad guys tasking sats on the life sized model..
