Strange. That didn't seem to help. And even if I query the remote DNS
servers from a test machine I have on another ISP it still fails, but
the name server from that ISP returns a result.

I saw something like that when our firewall was blocking the NS for
.edu domains. Set some firewall rules to allow 100% of DNS in/out for
a minute and see if that fixes it.
