That got me thinking of telegrams. I only sent one. I was a teenager trying to contact a former girlfriend.
But we received a few and in my inlaws stuff we found dozens that were sent to them when they got married. They all had that little strip of paper glued onto the form for each line of the message. I used to think someone was cutting those strips out of a printout. Nope, the printers actually printed on the little strip of paper. And in their world, “full stop” meant period. And a period got charged the same rate as a word. Someone had the glorious job of gluing strips onto forms all day long. Nice that you could send a note to someone and Western Union had to track them down and deliver it. Better than repeatedly trying to make person to person telephone calls. It really did have an email attribute that it was fast but could be launched and not worried about. The local newspaper office had one of those wire service printers running constantly. Those printouts were on long rolls of newsprint type paper. Slightly yellow. I think I owned one at one time when I was trying to get into RTTY as a ham. KSR48 I think. It was an ASCII machine where earlier ones were BAUDOT. I think those that are FB enthusiasts left a long time ago. I have never been on FB other than when my wife tells me that someone is posting something I should see. I will go there and see someone sent me a message 6 months ago. I apologize and give them my email address. So odd that younger folk look at email as antiquated. But then, none of them have ever sent or received a telegram... From: Bill Prince Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2021 9:08 AM To: af@af.afmug.com Subject: Re: [AFMUG] list dead?
