This is what I understand:

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines work in a way that they don't think
will prevent you from getting an infection in your nose. It won't spread
anywhere else. As a result, if you're exposed to covid, even after being
vaccinated, they think there is likely going to be a few days where you are
contagious, but not know it since you don't have any symptoms other than
some minor sniffles. I.E. just like it is today, except it won't progress
to a bad infection.

So, for right now, they're saying to keep wearing masks even if you're
vaccinated. That way those that are not vaccinated yet will still be
protected by everyone wearing masks.

What a lot of people missed and still miss (or choose to ignore) is that
mask-wearing is to protect others, not yourself. It also prevents
overloading of the health care system. If it was the other way around -
that you could wear a mask and not get infected and there wasn't the whole
overload the hospital thing going on then there likely wouldn't have been
any mask mandates at all - it would have been more "if you want to be an
idiot and not wear a mask and run the risk of catching this and dying then
that's on you" type of attitude. But since making the choice to not wear a
mask doesn't affect you, only others, the government kinda had to mandate
these since a certain amount of people tend to be self-centered idiots.
Add to that the disinformation going around and you're where we are today.

Because of the above, I have a lot less of a problem with a mask mandate
which has an intent to force people to not do stupid things which can hurt
others than some other rules which are more oriented toward preventing
people from hurting themselves.

I really expect that come mid-year when we switch from more people wanting
the vaccine than can get it to the government pleading with people to get
vaccinated that the mask mandates will start to quickly disappear as the
vaccine provides a way for individuals to nearly perfectly protect
themselves. At that point, the only way we'll see them back is if we end
up overloading the health care system again because of people not getting
vaccinated.
