A few years ago California instituted a "top 2" primary system, where all candidates from all parties were thrown into a single primary. The top-two vote getters (regardless of party) would go on to the regular election. The theory was that the left/right extremes would move closer to center. That has happened somewhat, but I think it would have been better with a "top 3".
