It's not smart to put all your eggs in one basket. Businesses can and do go belly up, taking owner's equity with it. Sometimes this can be sudden and unexpected. In addition, when it comes time to exit, there is no guarantee that a new purchaser would be able to be found, leaving all of that equity tied up in what is now a worthless business. As a result, it's always smart to take some money out of the business and use it to invest for the future.
Now, I'm not a big believer in playing the stock market like others do. I'm more into low cost index funds for most of the savings and an emergency fund in a high yield savings account. I do have a few individual stocks, but they're more long-term speculations for companies I think will still be around 30 years from now, or which I have some sort of vested interest in. I also don't have very much money in any individual stocks.
