The thing AutoCad is good at is incorporating real world georeferencing so that
distances etc are dead on. If you are doing mechanical drawings then yes,
almost anything will work for that.

Depending on what oyur purpose is, Sketchup is what I use. Its like CAD for
dummies. If youre just looking to draw out internals in 3d, is great, if youre
looking to draw out professional material to send to a machinist, maybe not so
much. but the price is right (free) and the learning curve is small. theres
more features in the paid version, I haven't needed them, but if i need
something drafted to send to a machinist, id pay somebody to do it because i
dont understand how to account for material thickness in a drawing. I assume
thats important

I was using DraftSight for a while but it was lacking something important.
Not sure what it was but I had to move to AutoCad.

It is not fully compatible with AutoCad. Seems like I had trouble putting
google earth images under the model space.

I've used DraftSight, which is quite good and had a free edition, but all of
the free editions will de-activate on Dec31st this year so if you wish to learn
that you don't have much time. The paid version is reasonably priced but you
cannot buy it, only subscription.

I used to be a draftsman, and I was pretty proficient with AutoCAD
versions up through 2000. After playing with more recent versions it's
pretty clear that I would have to relearn from scratch because
    everything is different now.

If I'm starting from square one, should I trouble myself with AutoCAD or
is there something else worth messing with?
