The skyview is the bottom layer, so if you create an opaque polygon overtop of the entire area and set it to the bottom layer you will only see roads/names and your pins/polygons.

It flattens the perspective I belive. In the current version you can ctrl+click to select multiple objects in the left hand pane.....but for many years you would have had to move one point to a folder at a time. They added a circle tool at some point, but that's another one that was inexplicably missing for years. You still can't make multiple selections from the map view. Not by ctrl+click or shift+click and not by dragging a box around objects.
