Something I can’t seem to find in any of this smart home stuff is a monitor for
a contact closure. It would need a cellphone app that can check the status,
and receive a push notification if the contact changes state.

I have a cattle farmer who wants to monitor his well pump that supplies water
to the cattle barns. There is already a switch for what he wants to monitor,
he just wants to monitor it remotely and be alerted if a problem occurs.

There are sensors for doors and windows but they sense the proximity of a
magnet, not an external contact closure.

If it were me I'd do Shelly.

You buy a Shelly 1. Single count is like $15. There are no additional costs
from Shelly.cloud.

The terminals are input/output (this is what power goes through the relay and
gets shut off/on). Do your 110vac or 12vdc (WATCH THE TERMINAL! It's covered
on newer ones with a plastic door) for this. Wire 110vac to your load/neutral
and that powers the device up.

Once powered, you can use a computer/phone to connect to the factory SSID
Shelly-MACMACMAC. The device is 192.168.33.1 (you get DHCP). Configure it to
connect to your WiFi (the client config).

Once it gets online you'll want to update the firmware and then what you want
to do from there can be through the cloud, Shelly.cloud app for your phone or
Google/Alexa voice, OR you can just control it via the relay's web interface or
local URL/API structure.

What other servers would be better?

I am totally new to iot.

I can imagine how I would build it. Device communicates to a server in the
cloud. Your cell phone also communicates to that same server etc. You gotta
hope the server never goes away.

Not sure how the iot device gets connected to the local wifi.

There must be some way to config it with SSID or something.

eWeLink has the most broken servers and product, though it's SUPER easy to
install, the reliability just isn't worth the convenience. It never worked
when you wanted to use it.

eWeLink pcb's work pretty well for smartphone/internet controlled relays, about

I tested my system again today with better antennas. Maybe 2 miles of reliable

I am starting to lean away from radio remote control. I presume there are some
cloud based switches that I could use? Just drop my cell phone into a box with
the hotspot turned on. A local cloud based relay can then be controlled from
another cell phone at the other end?

Does any of the unifi stuff provide this functionality?

Chances are pushing won't have the coverage you want. I still on a passing
system and we used to have hundreds of transmitters. Now we have maybe 10.

Why don't you get a higher power mobile and file for an itinerant license?
Digital radios normally have some i/o capability built in as well.

I know they won't be as cheap as the $30 BF junk though. At least some of that
gear isn't FCC certified.

For a guy that likes to roll his own there are a lot of options.

They used to make pagers with a relay in them. Are pagers still a thing?

Using Baofeng and Retevis VHF murs frequencies with DTMF control.

Not terribly happy with the range. It is only reliable for 2-3 miles at most.

Going to get some 5/8ths wave mag mount for the vehicle but not sure that is
going to help all that much.

Could try UHF but I doubt it will be much better.

Anyone know of a radio switch type of thing that works will cell phones?
