We stick with the outside surge suppressor.   We have had several dozen direct 
strikes to customer CPE equipment over the years.   Usually results in complete 
destruction of the CPE, outdoor cable shredded, and the SS turned into 
shrapnel.   Occasionally there is some indoor wiring damage but it’s minimal.   
No house fires so far which is what I am most concerned about.    I mounted a 
SS on the electrical panel in the basement at a house where the CPE took a 
direct hit.   No fire but it sure filled the basement with smoke and set off 
the fire alarm.   We don’t do that anymore.

If the SS isn’t grounded with the power and building it kills routers.   Just 
the way it goes.
