Latest thing I heard is that the large timbers used to make the spire do not exist any more. If they have to replace all the large timbers with engineered lumber, will it still be a historic building, or a replica of a historical building?

Perhaps some bureaucracy would not allow the modification.  I have a kid that lives in England.  They have structures that cannot be repaired, even in the most minor way, without detailed plans, approvals and using only a select set of approved handymen.
