Thanks for reaching out to the Google Ads API Forum.
To generate historic metrics, you need to use keyword_plan. The resource name
of the KeywordPlan have the following form:
customers/{customer_id}/keywordPlans/{kp_plan_id}
Could you privately provide the complete request and response logs along with
request-id for your statement “I had thought that this number was the 4th item
in the plan string, but this appears not to be the case (and I have traces to
prove it.)”?
However, to create a keyword plan, and to reuse the keyword plan for retrieving
forecast metrics and historic metrics, you may use this code example in our
supported client libraries.
