You are correct that you can use the Audience Performance Report
<https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/appendix/reports/audience-performance-report>,
but
you need to include the Criteria
<https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/appendix/reports/audience-performance-report#criteria>
field
so that the type of the audience will be fetched/included in your report.
