Hi Andrew, I completely understand your concern. For using the latest version v33.1.0 of client PHP library in Prod you would need PHP version 5.5.9 or higher as specified in the composer.json file available in this <https://github.com/googleads/googleads-php-lib/blob/master/composer.json#L5> section of the guide. Also, as you might be already aware, 5.4 and 5.5 versions of PHP have already reached End Of Life <http://php.net/supported-versions.php> which may be the reason we are asked to move to higher versions.
