Hi, Running reports is a read-only action, so you can do this against your production account without worrying about modifying data. To be extra safe you could use an OAuth2 refresh token created while logged in as a user with read-only access to your AdWords account.
One caveat here is that you will need an approved developer token from a production MCC in order to run reports against a production AdWords account. Regarding examples, the download_criteria_report.py<https://github.com/googleads/googleads-python-lib/blob/master/examples/adspygoogle/adwords/v201402/reporting/download_criteria_report.py> sample on github shows how to run a report using the Python library.
