There have been a number of announcements recently about changes to an API in production that I think are cause for concern. We are currently using v201101. Just recently I accidentally stumbed over a blog announcement that this version would be deprecated at the end of Feb 2012. With 3-4 month release cycles, this makes things hard. I could point out that there are plenty of previous API versions that have run a longer course than this one. Why deprecate all of them at once at such short notice?
Is there any formal communication about this deprecation? None came to me this time. A blog entry on blogspot isn't exactly formal notification. Is there some way I can subscribe to notifications about API changes? Next, just after this announcement, was an announcement that the developer token would be required when downloading a report. This blog entry gave approximately 2 weeks notice. v201101 is supposed to be stable now - you are deprecating v13 soon. So why change a production API so quickly, with the only notice being on blogspot? Next is the announcement that fields inside reports are changing. Same comments as above. If v20xx is stable and v13 is going away, then v20xx should be STABLE, meaning 'no changes until the next version'. Lastly, on to a question about how to test our support for ongoing changes. There is no announcement about when these changes will make it to the sandbox, or how to hint to the production API that we'd like it to behave as it will on date YYYY-MM-DD.
