Thanks Christian. Yes I know that the AdWords API does way more than the free tools. And I can understand having to pay for functionality that is not otherwise available for free.
I guess it just surprises me that Google would charge money for use of those areas of the AdWords API (areas such as keyword suggestions for example) that they provide for free in other forms.
