I just wanted to let folks know that there are a couple of different engineers looking into this behavior from multiple angles. It still isn't clear why this is happening (and almost equally oddly, why it's happening for getKeywordsFromSite() but not getKeywordVariations()).
So there's no resolution to the issue at this time, but do know it's being actively investigated.
