They shouldn't need to read the blog. I have put everything that is
needed to understand how search works immediately beneath the search
box. The only thing I could see missing is an explanation of the results.

We plan on adding all sorts of links to help new users with OpenSolaris.
That is definitely a primary goal; however, the functionality you
see now was driven by the November 2008.11 release, so a lot of
functionality had to be cut to meet deadlines.
