I currently use VM guests for my DR in a "warm" standby capacity.
They were setup with input from IBM, and as Wanda stated below, no support for tape libraries. In my experience the library hardware vendor (Quantum) did not support this either. We now use Data Domain DDR880's, one in production and one in DR, using the File device class. My TSM databases are backed up to the DD880's and replicated to our DR facility where they are restored to the warm standby VMs. I have tested it several times with system recovery times being under 30 minutes. When I was asked to design the solution I engaged my IBM rep who put me in touch with their SME who told me YES it was fully supported, even the DB backup to Data Domain and the recovery process that I use. This was a couple of years ago and realize things change. To this date I have not had the need for their assistance so I cannot confirm that they actually will. I'd be leery of doing deduplication on a VM because of the resources required, but other than that I don't see a reason why a VM would pose any issues. This assumes, of course, that you're using disk or a VTL rather than tape. Neither IBM or VMWare support using tape devices for backup from a VM. If so, are there any pros? I would also like to hear the cons. Ricky M.
