Modern tape drive hardware has compression techniques which are smart enough to avoid issues with data that is already compressed (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_Tape-Open) . I'm not aware of any good reasons to turn off compression in a modern tape drive: it can handle itself.
