Access to tape drives may be problematic. Some people have reported successfully connecting SAN tape drives to VMware guests, but others have reported attempting this feat and failing. It is generally considered a bad idea to share an HBA between tape and disk traffic. The VMware hosts at our site have all of their HBA's already in use to provide redundant paths to disk. I suspect that this is common practice at other sites. The tape drives appear to the guests as SCSI devices, which would compromise your ability to test the same code you intend to use in production. Some of the material I have read on attaching SAN tape drives to guests includes comparisons with experiences attaching real SCSI devices. These comparisons seem to imply that the process works reliably. Attaching a real SCSI device to a guest will of course require a SCSI interface on the host system. I suspect that such interaces are rather rare on VMware hosts.
