Hi Steven, VCB cuts the virtual disk file in 2 GB slices so that should be no problem. Using subfilebackup is actually the IBM-recommended way do vcb fullvm backups. See TSM 5.4 & 5.5 Technical Guide (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247447.pdf)
p. 346: "Before performing the Tivoli Storage Manager backup, we will enable subfile backup. Subfile backup is optional; however the fullvm operation is an ideal application for this function." Unfortunately they don't say anything about restore when using subfile backup. It would be really annoying having one basefile and 320 daily subfile deltas all of which have to be collected by TSM from various tapes. That would be really no fun, I suppose... :-( kind regards, Stephan On Sun, Mar 29, 2009 at 11:10 PM, Steven Harris <sjhar...@au1.ibm.com> wrote: > Stephan > > Are you aware that there is a 2GB architectural limit on subfile backups? > so all your files would need to be smaller than that. > > Steven Harris > TSM Admin, Sydney Australia > > > > > Stephan Boldt > <stephan.boldt+ad > s...@gmail.com> To > Sent by: "ADSM: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU > Dist Stor cc > Manager" > <ads...@vm.marist Subject > .EDU> [ADSM-L] Question regarding > subfilebackup > > 29/03/2009 09:47 > PM > > > Please respond to > "ADSM: Dist Stor > Manager" > <ads...@vm.marist > .EDU> > > > > > > > Hello! > > I'm considering using subfilebackup together with a fullvm vcb backup > (because there are few changes but huge virtual disk files), but I'm > unsure what happens when the basefile expires. > > Example: > - I want to keep 3 versions of these files. > - First backup is obviously the basefile > - Second and third backup is a small delta > > What happens when the fourth backup runs?
