Thank you for the reply. Your second paragraph is precisely the reason for my question - the instance was not starting correctly thus not logging any information to the screen or activity log. Not until I started it in the foreground did I realize the extent of the failures.
Thanks I will consult the admin guide. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] On Behalf Of Alex Paschal Sent: Monday, February 23, 2009 3:06 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] viewing logs on TSM instance startup Hi, Dave. Not that I know of. Since you're on AIX, I recommend piping your dsmserv output to dsmulog. This will store the output in rotating log files that you can check. It doesn't, however, fit your criteria of only logging during startup. On the "plus" side, I find using awk, grep, or a text editor to inspect those log files makes troubleshooting much faster and easier than using "query actlog" commands. Also, there are times when TSM crashes that it is not able to write the reason to the activity log. Dsmulog is an excellent way to capture that data for troubleshooting purposes. You can read more about dsmulog in the TSM for AIX Admin Reference. ________________________________ Alex Paschal Storage Solutions Engineer MSI Systems Integrators ________________________________ Your Business. I normally start the instance with the following command which allows me to exit my telnet session but does not allow me to view the status of the startup /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/tsmX/rc.tsmserv & There is also an option specified in my /etc/inittab to start each instance but I am not always ready to start them on bootup, however this too does not allow me to see any of the startup messages or errors? tsmXsrvr:2:once:/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/tsmX/rc.tsmserv >/dev/console 2>&1 Any help would be greatly appreciated.
