Lance - A variety of such full backup mysteries have appeared in ADSM-L. My suspicion is that the cause involves the Extended Attributes support in 5.4 (where Solaris 9 started using EAs). Your platform may have gotten the code sometime after the 5.4.0 level, and is operating under the influence. See APAR 1292891 for a sense of the issue at its introduction point.
