I've always imagined that the dsmserv process send all the data regardless, akin to >/dev/null. IE, the server carries on sending, but after pressing 'C' your not listening anymore.
I'd be interested to know what is really going on and why it needs to be. Most of the time you can ctrl+c and log back in quicker.
