As I read it we have: VERDATAEXISTS=5 RETEXTRA=30 Everybody take a shot at this: Day 1: File is backed up Day 2: File is backed up. Backup from Day 1 is marked Inactive. Day 3: File is backed up. Backup from Day 2 is marked inactive. Day 4: File is backed up. Backup from Day 3 is marked inactive. Day 5: File is backed up. Backup from Day 4 is marked inactive. Day 6. Nothing happens. You have 5 backups of the file, 1 active, 4 inactive. Day 7. Nothing happens. You have 5 backups of the file, 1 active, 4 inactive. Day 8. Etc. Day 32 File from Day 1 has been inactive for 30 days, becomes unavailable. When expiration runs, it is purged from the data base. Day 33 File from Day 2 has been inactive for 30 days, becomes unavailable. When expiration runs, it is purged from the data base. Day 34 Ditto for Day 3 file Day 35 Ditto for Day 4 file Day 36 Nothing happens. You have 1 backup remaining, from Day 5. Day 37 Nothing happens. Day 38 etc. . Day 91 File is changed/backed up again. Backup from Day 5 is marked inactive. Day 92 Nothing happens. You have 2 backups. Day 93 Nothing happens. You still have 2 backups. Day122 Backup from Day 5 has been inactive for 30 days, becomes unavailable. When expiration runs, it is purged from the data base. You have 1 backup. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Yiannakis Vakis Sent: Friday, July 14, 2006 6:16 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Retention of backup versions I'm sure this question has been asked many times but I want to be sure what is going on: A mgnt class has been defined so that 5 versions of a file are kept, with a retention of 30 days. A file that is changed daily is backed up for 5 consecutive days. The next backup is taken 3 months later. What happens to the inactive files?
