Thanks Bill. Sounds like the documentation is wrong. -----Original Message----- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of William Boyer Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 9:25 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: Mixed media (LTO1 and LTO2) with LTO2 Drives - small correction
We have a 3584 with LTO-2 drives and a single device class with FORMAT=DRIVE. I mix LTO1 and LTO2 media in the library with no problems. IF you do a Q LIBV F=D you can see the media type off to the right. When TSM mounts and LTO1 tape you see the default estcap for that type of tape. And the same for LTO2 tapes. I even have a 3583 with mixed LTO1 drives and a single LTO3 drive. Now that system I have 2 devclasses with FORMAT=ULTRIUMC and ULTRIUM3C and different storage pools. Since LTO1 is only read compatible with LTO3 drives. I had my devclasses set to FORMAT=DRIVE over a weekend and got some really strange storage pool volume assignments. Won't do that again! Everything worked, but I got LTO1 tapes in my stgpool that I thought would still be LTO3 tapes. Then when tsm mounts a tape the drive will recognize what kind of tape (lto1 or lto2) and use the correct format. If you want compression you will need to turn that on on the drive it self, this would be done with tapeutil I pressume. This would be the only way to use mixed media in the scratch pool. If you want to separate the different media to different storagepools you need to create two device classes (lto1 and lto2) and use the define vol command to assign the volumes to the storage pools as you like it. regards Rushforth, Tim wrote: >Hi: > > > >We are looking at upgrading one of our 3584 libraries to all LTO2 drives >(we currently have a mix of LTO1 and LTO2 drives) and use a mixture of >LTO1 and LTO2 media (we currently only use LTO1 media). > > > >The admin guide states: > > > >Mixed Media and Storage Pools: > >You cannot mix media formats in a storage pool.
