Yes Larry, you are correct, the format = drive, gives you the best compression based on the compression thechnology of the drives and how accepable the data is to compression, for instance exe,mp3,avi and files like that don´t compress at all, and database files, text files and logs compress werry well.

Seeking clarification on defining a devclass of type LTO. TSM server is
5.3, new library is 3583 FC with 6 3580 FC LTO2 drives. All tape volumes
in the library are LTO2. The question revolves around using DEVCL:ASS
FORMAT = DRIVE since we are not mixing LTO1 and LTO2 drives. The Admin.
reference guide states "the server selects the highest format that is
supported by the drive on which a volume is mounted". Does that mean it
will choose compressed format, using Ultrium 2 cartridges (ie ~ 400+G)?
